Peace Through Trust, Not Control
Learning to Release What Was Never Ours to Carry
One of the hardest things about trusting God is learning to let go. We want to trust Him, but sometimes we also want to know how everything will work out. We want the answers, the timeline, the details, and a guarantee that everything will be okay. So we take matters into our own hands.
We replay conversations. We plan for every possible outcome. We worry about tomorrow.
We try to fix what we cannot fix and carry burdens God never asked us to carry. And somehow, we convince ourselves that if we can just stay in control, we'll finally feel safe. But control doesn't give us the peace we are searching for….Trust does!
Proverbs 3:5–6 tells us: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”
Notice what Scripture doesn't say. It doesn't say, “Understand everything first, and then trust God.” It says trust Him. Even when you don't understand.
The Weight of Trying to Control Everything
Sometimes our desire for control comes from fear. We're afraid of what might happen, so we try to prepare for every possibility. We think about every “what if,” trying to protect ourselves from disappointment, pain, or uncertainty. But we were never created to know everything that God knows.
God sees the whole picture. We see only today. He knows what is ahead. He knows what we need. He knows the things we cannot see. And He is not surprised by tomorrow. What feels uncertain to us is never uncertain to Him. That doesn't mean everything will happen the way we want it to. Trusting God isn't believing that He will give us our preferred outcome. Trust means believing that God is good, wise, and faithful—even when the outcome isn't what we expected.
Letting Go Is an Act of Faith
Surrender can feel frightening because it means loosening our grip. But letting go doesn't mean giving up. It means giving God room to be God. When we surrender our plans, our fears, our relationships, our children, our finances, our future, and all the things we desperately want to control, we aren't walking away from responsibility. We're acknowledging that
God is ultimately in control, and we are not.
Psalm 46:10 says:
“Be still, and know that I am God.”
Sometimes being still is one of the most courageous things we can do. It means stopping the frantic search for answers. It means putting down the burden of “What if?” It means saying, “Lord, I don't know what tomorrow holds, but I know You hold tomorrow.” That is faith.
Trusting God One Day at a Time
Trust isn't usually built through one giant decision. It grows in the ordinary moments. You trust God with today's problem. Then tomorrow brings another one, and you trust Him again. You surrender the thing that keeps you awake tonight. Then you wake up the next morning and surrender it again. Little by little, you begin to discover something beautiful:
God really is faithful.
The more we experience His faithfulness, the more deeply our roots grow. We begin to realize that we don't have to carry tomorrow today.
Jesus said:
“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things.”
— Matthew 6:34
Tomorrow has not been given to you yet.
Today has. So live today. Trust today. Pray today. And let God take care of tomorrow.
When You Feel Like You Can't Let Go
Maybe there is something you're struggling to surrender right now. A situation you desperately want to fix. A person you desperately want to protect. A future you desperately want to control. A question you desperately want answered. God isn't asking you to pretend you aren't afraid. He's simply asking you to bring your fear to Him.
Isaiah 41:10 reminds us:
“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”
You don't have to hold everything together when God is holding you.
Let that truth settle into your heart today. You can loosen your grip. You can breathe. You can stop trying to figure out every detail. You can trust the God who sees what you cannot see and knows what you cannot know.
An Anchored Woman Lets God Hold What She Cannot
Being an anchored woman doesn't mean you have everything under control. It means you've learned where to take the things you cannot control. You take them to Jesus. You may still have questions. You may still have tears. You may still have moments of fear.
But underneath it all is a growing confidence that says:
“God, I don't understand this, but I trust You.”
That is where peace begins. Not when everything makes sense. Not when every problem disappears. But when your heart finally realizes that God is trustworthy even when life isn't predictable. So today, release the need to control the outcome. Give God your plans. Give Him your fears. Give Him your unanswered questions. Give Him the things you've been carrying alone. And then rest.
The God who has carried you this far is fully capable of carrying what comes next.
A Prayer for Trust
Dear Heavenly Father,
I confess that sometimes I try to control the things I'm afraid to surrender. I worry about what might happen, I search for answers, and I try to figure out how everything will work out. Today, I choose to loosen my grip and place it all back into Your hands. Help me trust You when I don't understand. Help me believe You are working even when I cannot see what You're doing. Teach me to stop carrying tomorrow and to receive the grace You have given me for today. When fear tells me I need to take control, remind me that You are already in control. Give me the courage to surrender, the faith to trust, and the peace that comes from knowing I am held by You. I don't know what tomorrow holds, but I know You hold tomorrow. And that is enough.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
Reflection
What are you trying to control that God is asking you to surrender?
Take a moment today to name it before God.
Then pray:
“Lord, I give this to You. I don't know what You will do, but I trust You with it.” You may have to surrender it more than once. That's okay. Trust is built one surrender at a time. And each time you place it back into God's hands, your roots grow a little deeper and your soul becomes a little more anchored in His peace.
